Here’s the problem: you know your “what” but not your “why”. Being liked and accepted is wonderful but if you are trying too hard to please others, think again. People-pleasing is taxing and adds stress to your life. Manage this problem first before you start setting your resolution because in the end it is about your life and happiness, and not someone else’s.

Solution

1.   Claim your identity

If your personality and attitude change wildly in each social scenario - with friends, family and co-workers - it’s a sign you are untrue to yourself. However, it doesn’t mean you have to treat everyone the same way because there are things only your besties ought to know. The idea is not to be a phony - you don’t have to hide the quirky or awkward things that make up your identity.

2.   Don’t waste time & energy

Life is too short to spend on being someone you are not and doing things you don’t like to do. Be more mindful of how you spend your day and you’ll have more time doing things that you are passionate about -like a hobby, self-development, relaxation, and activities that make you truly happy.

3.   Be confident

Changing your personality to fit a character that other people think you should be is bad for your self-esteem and confidence. Accept the fact that there will always be some people don’t like you no matter what you do. So, might as well you embrace who you are and be comfortable with it.

4.   Stick to people who care

People who are good for you will stand by your side no matter what. The quantity of your relationships is meaningless, so shift your focus to the quality relationships that make you happy and fulfilled.

The more your goal reflects your true self, the stronger it sticks in your imagination and the more passionate you’ll be, and the more likely you will succeed.
